Jesus said that the most important commandment is the one that says to love the Lord your God. That is true. But we have to be careful in how we interpret that. Consider this: The reason why I love God is because He first loved me. But, the reason why He loves me is because He is Love. In other words, The foundation of my love for Him is His love for me. His love for me, however, is based on His character, His nature, Himself. I remember receiving an e-mail devotional that says religion is humanity’s search for God. But Christianity is God’s search for humanity.
You see, Christianity is not about people trying to make it to heaven. It is about Jesus who came to take us to heaven. “The Son of man did not come to be served, but to serve and give His life as ransom for many” said Jesus in Mathew 20. This should be the foundation of your relationship with God. It is an unwavering foundation. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor anything in all creation can shake this foundation.
If in case you feel that your love for God is inadequate, the good news is that your love for Him is not the foundation of your relationship with Him. He loved you long before you even knew Him.
“God demonstrates His own love towards us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8
