If you ask my 4 year old what going to school is all about he would tell you what he does at school. He would probably say something like school is all about learning ABC’s and playing with friends at recess. The truth, however, is that school is about getting ready for life, it is about building a career, it is about learning things to be better equipped for life when you become an adult.
For a lot of people today Christianity is about do’s and don’ts. In fact, that is the very reason why they don’t like the idea of being a Christian. They say they just can’t handle the do’s and don’ts, too many rules that make no sense at all. What they fail to realize is that that is not what Christianity is about. That is much like saying you don’t want to go school because you don’t want to get up in the morning. Of course most of us don’t like to get up in the morning but we do it because we have to.
The Christians in Rome had a big debate about a meat sacrificed for idols. They were arguing big time whether as Christians they are allowed to eat that meat or not as if their Christianity depends wholly on it. Paul had to address the issue. He said to them, “For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” Rom 14:17.
Christianity is not about do’s and don’ts, even though there are do’s and don’ts. It is all about righteousness peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
