“ No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.”
These are Jesus’ own words. He said this during his sermon on the mount. I find it very interesting to see that these two masters are God and Money. I read that and I said to myself “Genzeb defar new”. I am carrying a Mastercard in my pocket and thinking that it is my servant, but it is actually trying to be my master…hmmm…. geta yigesitsew. No wonder they call it Mastercard.
Jesus made it clear in his sermon that we have to choose between these two masters. The mastercard and the heavenly master. There is no way we can serve both. So how do choose God over money?
The most practical way to choose God over money is to give. Giving shows obedience to God’s principle of giving. Also, by giving, we are giving away the other master.
Here is a quote from Leo Tolstoy, who is not even a Christian:
“Money is a new form of slavery, and distinguishable from the old simply by the fact that it is impersonal -- that there is no human relation between master and slave."
