I, Me and Myself
By Semere @ 9:40 AM :: 296 Views :: 4 Comments :: :: Holy Spirit/Gifts/Fruit.., Jesus

I or me or myself are words we use to describe oneself.  We use them when we talk about ourselves.  Jesus used the word "I" many times in a way that nobody else in history has dared to use it.  He said things like:

  • I am the life and the resurrection..... John 11:25
  • I am the way the truth and the life..... John 14:6
  • I am the light of the world..... John 8:12
  • I am the bread of life...... John 6:35
  • I will give you rest..... Matt 11:28
  • and many more....

These are hefty claims that nobody else ever had the guts to utter.  Someone said Jesus has to either be the true Son of God that He claimed He is  or a psychotic who has no idea what he is talking about.   Even though we know that He is the former,  that conclusion kind of makes sense from a non-believer perspective.

What do you have to say about yourself?  after saying "I",  what words follow?  What are you?  Who are you?  what do you have?  Do you have things in your life that make you say...I have this...I am this...I own this...I can do this...etc...things that you are proud of?  If so, I have one small biblical warning for you:  and that is Jesus and only Jesus has the right to use the word "I" with full confidence without having to depend on anyone.

The bible says "What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?" 1 Cor 4:7

Every time we talk about I,  this verse should guide our tongue.  The word "I' should always be accompanied by gratitude to Christ,  room for the will of God and due credit to the one God who owns everything including I.

 Blessings,

The Cyber Evangelist

awesome article

Thank you for finally clarifying that very important point. I get so sick of people that boast in themselves as if they do everything on their own.
Without the help of Jesus, we wouldn't even be able to breathe... and we need to make sure we point that out anytime we try to take credit for something.

Awesome article Seme

Wonderful article. But one question, did Jesus himself not admit that only through the Father's will was he able to perform miracles? How then does Jesus "have the right to use the word "I" with full confidence without having to depend on anyone"? Through admitting his dependence to his Father, Jesus shows us how we too can do great things when depending on Christ.

Kalki,

You have a valid point that I definitely agree with and may even use in a different context.

But in this context I am talking about Jesus the God, God the Son, who is one and the same with God the father and God ths Holy Spirit....

Your question takes us back to the mystery of the Trinity.....they are one and yet they are three....that is hard to grasp....and I think that is why we have discussions like this that can swing either ways....
