In just over two decades of living in this world, on many occasions I have been asked why I believe in God. Although my answers have evolved as I’ve grown over the years, the core point stays the same. If could say the first response that comes to mind, it would be “how could you not believe in God?” but I’ve come to realize that doesn’t necessarily answer why “I” specifically believe in God. My answer to the same question many Christians have been asked is this; because I have a personal relationship with God.
As plain and elementary as it may sound, all my reasons for believing in Him are the result of my relationship with Him. And like all relationships this too has a struggle, because I, like a child struggle to understand what He knows is best for me, to live up to the paradigm He set before me and most of all, I struggle to love Him as much as He loves me. And these are just a few issues that arise every single day between Him and me. It may seem that our relationship is based on struggle, but it is actually the contrary, its foundation is Joy.
As I look back in this short time of my life, I can honestly say, the greatest and most memorable moments of my life are at the presence of God. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had great moments with family and friends, but the simplest moments with God are the ones that stand out. Those moments are the ones that help me hold on to God, not because I’m living in the past, but because I look forward to the future knowing I will have much more joyful moments with Him, since He promised to never leave me nor forsake me. |
